Public Debt and GDP

Which countries have the greatest public debts relative to the size of their economies? The IMF has a great data mapping tool, which includes the ability to look at historical data and play back changes over time. The following graph comes from their historical public debt database; the graph below was adjusted using PPP. The most surprising country for me was Australia; they’ve managed to keep their debt low while Europe and N. America have struggled with fiscal responsibility.

The most recent year in this dataset is 2009 (as shown above); I wonder how much worse 2010 will look?
